Blade Runner Universe is Expanding into Anime on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll
The year is 2032, and the mysteries of the Blade Runner universe are beginning to unfold.
Inspired by the Oscar-winning film BLADE RUNNER 2049, Adult Swim has teamed up with Crunchyroll and Alcon Television Group to produce a new anime series called BLADE RUNNER – BLACK LOTUS.
The premiere series will feature thirteen episodes created by Sola Digital Arts animation studio. The adventures in each 30-minute episode will be directed by Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama; Shinichiro Watanabe will serve as creative producer.
“I first saw BLADE RUNNER in 1982, at age 11. It has remained one of the defining films of my life,” said Jason DeMarco, SVP/creative director of Adult Swim on-air. “To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.”
Though the series will include some familiar faces from the BLADE RUNNER universe, the overall plot is still being kept secret. The only confirmed fact? The story will take place in 2032.
Adult Swim will have the global distribution rights to the English dubbed versions of the series, which will air on the network’s popular anime programming block Toonami. Crunchyroll will also stream BLADE RUNNER – BLACK LOTUS for its community of more than 45 million registered users and 2 million subscribers worldwide.
