From the silver screen to TCM’s silver anniversary
On an ordinary April afternoon in 1994, the extraordinary took place.
In the center of New York City’s Times Square, surrounded by some of Hollywood’s most notable stars, Ted Turner launched Turner Classic Movies, a network dedicated to honoring and preserving classic films.
Twenty-five years later, TCM continues to celebrate cinematic treasures and inspire movie lovers around the world with its uncut and commercial-free content.
In honor of the network’s 25th anniversary on April 14, 2019, TCM will air an extensive programming salute all month-long, showcasing fan favorites such as Robert Osborne’s “Best of Private Screenings” and “The Best of The Essentials” double features.
To commemorate the occasion, the network will also be airing a two-week special primetime tribute featuring 25 of TCM’s biggest fans. The lucky fans selected will serve as guest programmers with TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and make on-air dedications to their favorite films.
“TCM has remained true to its mission for a quarter century, airing films uncut and commercial free to a growing community of film lovers. And - we’ve truly been able to evolve the TCM brand from a cable TV network to a true lifestyle brand, with our fans at the core of everything we do,” said Jennifer Dorian, general manager - TCM. “Our passionate and engaged fanbase is the driving force behind our success, and it’s been thrilling to watch TCM become a gathering place for film lovers everywhere who come to us not only for the great films, but also to join a community of like-minded film lovers of all generations.”
Over the years, the two-time Peabody Award winning network has grown an extraordinary fan base, drawing in movie enthusiasts around the world with its unparalleled vault of films and immersive events such as the TCM Classic Cruise and the annual TCM Classic Film Festival.
“TCM has formed a bond with our fans like no other in television. They not only watch us, they watch over us. We wouldn’t have made it 25 years without our devoted community of movie lovers,” said Ben Mankiewicz, TCM Primetime Host. “Their passion for film keeps us laser-focused on our mission, to preserve and protect the legacy of classic films. And I fully expect that mission to be the same when we celebrate our 50th anniversary.”
TCM will also debut some celebratory swag for all its passionate fans who want to help observe the beloved network’s 25th anniversary. In honor of the momentous milestone, TCM will be releasing an exclusive 25th anniversary merchandise collection, offering fans vintage artwork and commemorative wine from the TCM Wine Club.
