John Stankey is responsible for the company’s media business which includes HBO, Turner, Warner Bros., and Otter Media.
Together, these business units are leaders in the industry in creating premium content, operate one of the world’s largest TV and film studios, own a deep library of entertainment content, and own or have a management stake in more than 25 digital properties. WarnerMedia is one of four businesses operating under AT&T Inc. and had revenues of more than $31 billion in 2017.
Home Box Office sets the standard for premium video, earning more Primetime Emmy awards than any other network in the last 16 years. Additionally, HBO licenses programming in more than 150 countries. Warner Bros. is one of the world’s largest producers of film/TV programming and is home to such beloved franchises as Wonder Woman, Justice League, Harry Potter, LEGO and Lord of the Rings. Turner delivers some of the most valuable brands in the world across entertainment, sports, news and kids programming, and offers a portfolio of advertising solutions. Otter Media is one of the largest over-the-top (OTT) and streaming-media companies.
Previously, John led the integration planning team in support of the AT&T and Time Warner merger. Before that, he served as CEO – AT&T Entertainment Group, which provides entertainment and communications experiences for millions of TV, mobile and broadband subscribers in the U.S. Under John’s leadership, AT&T created new mobile video experiences for consumers, including the launch in late 2016 of DIRECTV NOW, a streaming video service, the integration of the company’s video, mobile and broadband operations, and creation of a new, made-for-streaming video technology platform.
John was named to that position after leading the company’s acquisition of DIRECTV in 2015, when he was AT&T’s chief strategy officer, responsible for the company’s corporate strategy, M&A and business development initiatives.
As chief strategy officer, John worked with The Chernin Group in 2014 to create Otter Media, a joint venture that acquires, invests in and launches over-the-top (OTT) video services. Today, Otter Media is one of the largest OTT and streaming-media companies, with more than 1.2 million paying subscribers and 2 of the top 20 subscription-video-on-demand services.
In his 3-decade career with AT&T, John has held a variety of other senior leadership positions including: president and CEO – AT&T Business Solutions, president and CEO – AT&T Operations, group president – Telecom Operations, chief technology officer and chief information officer.
He holds a bachelor's degree in finance from Loyola Marymount University and an M.B.A. from UCLA. He serves on the board of directors of UPS.
