Hello Kitty and her friends are headed to Hollywood! For the very first time ever, the beloved character and her friends will be seen on the big screen in an English language feature film.
New Line Cinema and FlynnPictureCo. (Disney’s Jungle Cruise, Journey to the Center of the Earth) will team up to produce the film, along with Sanrio, the official home to Kitty and her pals. This marks the first time ever that Sanrio has granted film rights to the Hello Kitty characters.
Richard Brener, President and Chief Creative Officer, and Carolyn Blackwood, President and Chief Content Officer, New Line Cinema, said in a joint statement, “We are thrilled to partner with Sanrio and FlynnPictureCo. on developing a film based on this treasured icon. It’s a rare privilege to have the opportunity to explore the possibilities of such timeless IP. Hello Kitty and her friends have been part of our shared culture for decades, and we look forward to exploring where her newest adventure will take her.”
It’s hard to believe that Hello Kitty was first introduced to us on a coin purse in the mid-70’s and has since become one of the most beloved characters around the world and licensing juggernaut. Details on how this icon (not a cat, remember?) will be adapted for the big screen have yet to be shared, but we can count on it being sweet!
