John Stankey is responsible for the company’s media and entertainment business which includes WarnerMedia Entertainment (HBO, TNT, TBS, truTV and Direct-to-Consumer), WarnerMedia News & Sports (CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español, HLN, Great Big Story, Turner Sports, Bleacher Report and the AT&T Regional Sports Networks), and Warner Bros. (New Line, DC Entertainment, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Boomerang, Otter Media, Turner Classic Movies and others).
Together, these business units and consumer brands are industry leaders in creating premium content, operate one of the world’s largest TV and film studios, own a deep library of entertainment programming, and own or have a management stake in more than 25 digital properties. WarnerMedia is one of four businesses operating under AT&T Inc. and had revenues over $33 billion in 2018.
Home Box Office continues to set the standard for premium subscription video, earning more Primetime Emmy awards than any other network in the last 17 years for shows such as: Game of Thrones, Veep and Westworld. Warner Bros. is one of the world’s largest producers of film/TV programming and is home to beloved movies and franchises including: Aquaman, A Star Is Born, Harry Potter, LEGO, Hanna-Barbera, Friends and Lord of the Rings. TNT, TBS, CNN, Cartoon Network, and others continue to deliver valuable consumer brands across entertainment, sports, news and kids programming, and offer a portfolio of advertising solutions. CNN.com and Bleacher Report are leading digital properties and WarnerMedia plans to launch a new Direct-to-Consumer service in the Fourth Quarter of 2019.
Previously, John led the integration planning team in support of the AT&T and Time Warner (now WarnerMedia) merger. Before that, he served as CEO – AT&T Entertainment Group, which provided entertainment and communications experiences for millions of TV, mobile and broadband subscribers in the U.S. Under John’s leadership, AT&T created new mobile video experiences for consumers, including the launch of the DIRECTV NOW streaming video service, the integration of the company’s video, mobile and broadband operations, and creation of a new, made-for-streaming video technology platform.
Before this, John was chief strategy officer responsible for AT&T’s corporate strategy, M&A and business development initiatives. While in this role, John worked with The Chernin Group to create Otter Media, a joint venture that acquires, invests in and launches over-the-top (OTT) video services. Today, Otter Media has more than 90 million engaged viewers in the U.S. alone.
During his tenure with AT&T, John has held a variety of other leadership positions including: president and CEO – AT&T Business Solutions, president and CEO – AT&T Operations, group president – Telecom Operations, chief technology officer and chief information officer.
He holds a bachelor's degree in finance from Loyola Marymount University and an M.B.A. from UCLA. He serves on the board of directors of UPS.
